If you don’t know, I’ve struggled with anxiety the past couple years forcing me to miss out on a lot of things. We all have our worries especially when traveling, some is just worse than others. Here are some of my tips for traveling when you have anxiety.
-
Before your trip print out all confirmations, tickets, copy of your passport, etc and put it in a folder that way everything is together in one place.
-
If you’re on anxiety medication, make sure you pack it in your carry on in a bottle with your name on it. If your name is not on the prescription bottle they can confiscate it so try not to bring any loose pills on the plane unless they’re over the counter. God forbid your luggage gets lost you don’t want to not have your medicine.
-
Stay away from stuff that brings on your anxiety. For me certain foods can make my stomach hurt so I try to stay away from those.
-
Alcohol makes it worse. If you’re on medication, be careful of your alcohol intake. Sometimes it increases the side effects so it’s best to be safe than sorry. This said, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a pint or a glass of wine every so often.
-
Make sure you apply for an international phone plan or download texting apps like Whatsapp so you can keep in touch with your friends and family. This is important especially if you’re getting anxious or homesick.
-
Be aware. If you’re anxious about something happening to you just be aware of your surroundings. Keep your personal items close to you and don’t be naive.
-
Learn key phrases in the native language. Some key phrases would be “can you help me?”, “where’s the nearest bathroom?”, “do you speak English?”
-
Make sure to always have cash on you in case you get stuck in a sticky situation.
-
Do whatever makes you comfortable. Although this is your time to explore, you don’t have to push yourself too much.
-
Remember to have fun, everything will be okay!

These are some great tips! I love traveling and I am looking forward to every trip but I do get anxious when I leave home because I am afraid of flying. I always have my anti-anxiety medication with me to take on the flight.
